A bad headache can ruin your whole day. This guide will help you figure out what caused your headache and how you can make it stop, fast.

You get headaches when the muscles in veins laying just on top of your skull begin to swell. The nerves associated with those swollen veins and muscles send a message to the brain, protesting the swelling. You experience this message as a headache.

The majority of headaches are caused by tension. A tension headache feels as if someone wrapped a rubber band around your head. It can occur anywhere, but usually is localized to the back of the head and upper neck or across the forehead. There are several common causes of tension headaches including loud noise, lack of sleep, too much sugar, excessive stress, or hormonal changes. Tension headaches can usually be relieved by a nap, massage, a cool compress, or time alone in a quiet area.

Another common headache is the sinus headache. You may feel this headache radiating down from the crown to spots on your face, as pressure from the sinus cavities causes this condition. Try drinking fluids, clearing your sinuses, massaging your temples and sinuses, and taking hot showers.

One of the worst kinds of headaches is the migraine. Migraines are so intense that they often cause nausea, vomiting, the seeing of stars, unbearable pain, feeling faint, and the inability to handle light, strong smells, or any kind of noise. Migraines respond best to dark, quiet, and rest.

If a headache is accompanied by high fever, convulsions, loss of muscle control, or the inability to communicate clearly and cohesively, you will want to visit the emergency room to rule out meningitis, stroke, or encephalitis.

You will usually be able to fight off headaches by adjusting your diet or surroundings. You may find that a good rest and a couple of analgesics (such as ibuprofen) will do the trick. However, you'll want to consult your doctor if your headaches keep coming back or don't go away with simple remedies.
